Why doesn't the engine turn around immediately when I start the car?

The answer has to do with the rotation of the engine and the timing of the ignition. When you start the car, the engine is at rest and the crankshaft is in the correct position to begin firing the cylinders in the proper order. However, the engine must first build up enough speed to create enough force to turn the crankshaft. This process is known as "cranking." Once the engine is cranked, the cylinders will begin to fire in the correct order and the engine will rotate around. However, the engine takes a few seconds to reach its full speed. This is why you may notice that the engine doesn't immediately turn around when you start the car. It's also why you should never turn the key back to the "off" position while the engine is still cranking. Doing so can damage the starter or engine.
